Nicotine Pouches

Nicotine pouches are small white pouches of plant-based fibre, pharmaceutical-grade nicotine, flavourings and sweeteners — with no tobacco leaf, dust or stem. You place one between your upper lip and gum and the nicotine absorbs through the gum over 5–30 minutes. There is no smoke, no vapour and no spitting, which is why they can be used in places where smoking and vaping are impossible: offices, flights, stadiums, trains. They are sometimes called “white pouches”, “nicopods” or — confusingly — “snus”, though real snus contains tobacco and is a different product entirely.

Yes. Nicotine pouches are fully legal to buy, sell and use in the UK because they contain no tobacco, which keeps them outside the UK’s oral-tobacco ban. That ban does apply to snus, which has been illegal to sell here since 1992. From 29 October 2026 the Tobacco and Vapes Act 2026 makes 18 the statutory minimum age of sale for pouches, and an advertising ban follows on 1 June 2027 — regulation, not prohibition. Snus is a Swedish oral tobacco product; nicotine pouches are tobacco-free. That one difference decides everything else: snus is banned from sale in the UK, pouches are legal; snus can stain teeth over time, pouches generally do not. When footballers or TikTok say “snus”, they almost always mean tobacco-free pouches — a 2024 PFA/Loughborough study found about one in five professional footballers uses them, mostly the legal pouch kind. If it says “tobacco-free” on the can, it is a nicotine pouch, not snus.

Some users get soreness, dryness or small white patches where the pouch sits; ASH lists gum irritation and possible recession among the reported effects, and long-term evidence is still limited. The practical mitigations that work: rotate the pouch to a different spot rather than parking it in the same place all day, keep sessions under 30 minutes, drop a strength level, and give your gums genuinely pouch-free hours. Generally no. The staining associated with smoking and oral tobacco comes mainly from tar and tobacco pigments — neither of which exists in a tobacco-free pouch. White pouches sit against the gum rather than the teeth and do not leave the yellow-brown discolouration snus can. Normal dental hygiene still applies, and heavily coloured flavourings in any product can contribute marginally over time, but compared with cigarettes or snus, staining is one problem pouches largely remove.

Most regular users land somewhere between five and ten pouches a day; heavy users go higher, but more pouches is rarely the answer — if you are reaching for the can constantly, the strength is probably too low, and one Regular pouch beats three Milds. Two cautions: airlines’ own policies vary, so be discreet; and check the law at your destination before you fly — nicotine pouches are banned or restricted in some countries, and arriving with a stack of cans somewhere they are prohibited is a bad start to a holiday.

The tingling under your lip is the nicotine and the pouch’s pH doing their job — slightly alkaline chemistry helps the nicotine absorb through the gum, and your mouth notices. It typically peaks in the first five to ten minutes and fades. A mild tingle is normal and most users stop registering it after their first few cans. A genuine burn that lasts the whole session, or soreness that persists afterwards, is different: that is your cue to move the pouch to a fresh spot, shorten the session or drop a strength.

Plenty of people online say so; the science is less generous. Controlled studies show nicotine produces small, short-lived improvements in alertness and reaction speed — and in regular users, most of that felt “lock-in” is simply relief from withdrawal rather than a genuine boost.
