Product Description

VELO Freezing Peppermint: The Coldest Mint VELO Makes

VELO Freezing Peppermint is the strongest and coldest peppermint in VELO's UK line-up, sold as slim tobacco-free pouches in 11mg, 14mg and 17mg, twenty to a can. VELO's own product page calls it "our strongest menthol experience of all our flavours", which is the sort of claim that usually deserves a raised eyebrow. This one holds up. If you came looking for it under the old name, you have landed correctly: this is the pouch that used to be sold as VELO Freeze (formerly Freeze, then briefly Mighty Peppermint) before the 2024 rebrand settled the argument.

The recipe never changed. Same peppermint, same nicotine per pouch, different can. What did change is how you read the strength, because the printed words Strong, Ultra and Max gave way to a row of dots on the lid. Freezing Peppermint sits on the top three rungs of that ladder: four dots, five dots, six dots. Above six, there is nothing. VELO caps itself at 17mg across every flavour it makes, so this is genuinely the ceiling rather than a marketing tier with a stronger version hiding behind it.

What Does VELO Freezing Peppermint Taste Like?

Cold arrives first. Peppermint arrives about two seconds later, and that ordering is the whole personality of the pouch. Where a standard mint gives you flavour with a cooling edge, this inverts the relationship: the freeze leads, and the peppermint rides along behind it like a passenger. Within the first minute your whole lower lip has gone properly, unmistakably cold.

The flavour itself is dry and clean. No sweetness worth mentioning, no fruit, no confectionery softness. Think of the sharp end of a peppermint oil rather than a mint humbug. Users repeatedly describe the release as smooth rather than harsh, which is the odd trick VELO pulls off here: something this intense has no business being this comfortable under the lip, and yet the pouch stays soft and the drip stays low.

Expect roughly 30 to 45 minutes of real flavour. Mints last longer than fruit in the VELO range, and Freezing Peppermint sits at the long end of that, though the cooling outlives the taste by a noticeable margin. The last ten minutes are mostly ice with a memory of mint attached.

Now the honest part. This is not an all-day pouch for most people. Run three or four back to back and your palate goes numb enough that the fourth one tastes like the third one's ghost, and anything you eat afterwards will taste strange for a while. Cold water in particular becomes an experience. A few users also report a faintly salty note in the drip, which is a known VELO trait across the range rather than a fault specific to this flavour, but it is worth knowing before you commit to ten cans.

How Strong Is VELO Freezing Peppermint? 11mg, 14mg and 17mg

Three strengths, and the gaps between them are real rather than cosmetic. Every one of them sits above the middle of the market, so there is no gentle option here by design.

StrengthDots on the canVELO tierOld nameBest for
11mg4 dots ⦿⦿⦿⦿OriginalX-StrongStepping up from a 10mg mint. The entry point to this flavour
14mg5 dots ⦿⦿⦿⦿⦿IntenseUltraEstablished daily pouch users who find 10mg fades too fast
17mg6 dots ⦿⦿⦿⦿⦿⦿Intense (X-Intense on the can)MaxHigh tolerance only. The strongest pouch VELO sells

The 11mg is the one most people should start on, and it is worth saying that the can may print it as 10.9mg. Same pouch. That decimal is a legacy of the old X-Strong recipe carried straight through the rebrand, and retailers round it to 11 for tidiness. Coming from a 10mg mint such as VELO Crispy Peppermint, the nicotine step is modest but the cooling step is enormous, so treat this as a flavour change first and a strength change second.

The 14mg is the quiet sweet spot. Five dots gives you a longer, steadier plateau than the 11mg without the front-loaded jolt of the 17mg, and for anyone who has been running a strong mint daily for a few months this is usually the one that stops feeling like work.

The 17mg deserves a warning rather than a sales pitch. Six dots is VELO's ceiling, and by general agreement among long-term pouch users it over-delivers relative to its number: strong-pouch reviewers rate it alongside brands that print far scarier figures on the tin. Combined with the maximum cooling, a 17mg Freezing Peppermint on an empty stomach is a memorable way to learn about your own tolerance. Do not start here. If your current pouch is 6mg or 8mg, the jump to 17mg is not a step, it is a stunt.

Reading the Dots: What Four, Five and Six Actually Mean

VELO introduced the dot system in January 2024 and then explained it in roughly one sentence, which is why half the questions about this product are really questions about the lid. Here is the version that answers them.

The dots count absolute milligrams per pouch, not concentration. One dot is 4mg, two is 6mg, three is 8mg or 10mg depending on the flavour, four is 11mg, five is 14mg and six is 17mg. That third rung is genuinely ambiguous and VELO has never tidied it up, so on any three-dot flavour you check the printed mg rather than trusting the dots. On this page the ambiguity does not apply, because Freezing Peppermint only exists at four, five and six.

Worth knowing if you buy across brands: a dot is not a universal unit. It tells you where a pouch sits inside VELO's own range and nothing about how it compares to a ZYN or a Nordic Spirit. It also says nothing about how strong a pouch feels, which depends on moisture, pH and how quickly the nicotine crosses the gum. Mint reads stronger than fruit at identical milligrams, and Freezing Peppermint is about as mint as mint gets, so a 14mg here will feel more assertive than a 14mg fruit pouch from the same shelf. Our complete guide to VELO nicotine pouches walks through the whole ladder if you want the wider picture.

From Velo Freeze to Mighty Peppermint to Freezing Peppermint

This flavour has been renamed twice in three years, which explains a great deal of the confusion in search results. It began as Velo Freeze, in X-Strong, Ultra and Max. Around 2023 the X-Strong became Mighty Peppermint, a name that lasted barely long enough to print. Then the January 2024 global rebrand brought colour-coded cans, the dot system and a final name: Freezing Peppermint, with the old Ultra and Max becoming the 14mg and 17mg you see above.

People still search for Velo Freeze in serious numbers, and older stock with the previous packaging still turns up in supermarkets, so both systems are in circulation at once. If you are holding a black-and-blue can that says Freeze Max and wondering whether the new teal one is the same thing, it is. Independent side-by-side reviews confirmed the recipe and the milligrams carried over untouched. Only the artwork moved.

One naming trap worth flagging: VELO sells a product called Max in the United States that runs at 7mg. It is a completely different range and has nothing to do with the old UK Freeze Max at 17mg. If you have read an American review, check which Max they mean before drawing conclusions.

Freezing Peppermint vs the Rest of the VELO Mint Ladder

VELO runs a genuine temperature gradient through its mints, and picking correctly matters more than picking the highest number. Here is where the stocked mints sit against each other.

PouchStrengthsCharacter
VELO Freezing Peppermint11mg, 14mg, 17mgMaximum cooling, dry peppermint. The coldest and the strongest
VELO Peppermint Storm11mg, 14mg, 17mgSame strengths, sharper and brighter peppermint. Less deep-freeze, more snap
VELO Crispy Peppermint6mg, 10mgThe UK best-seller. Balanced everyday peppermint with a comfortable chill
VELO Bright Spearmint6mg, 8mg, 14mgSweeter spearmint, gentlest cooling. The beginner mint
VELO Icy Berries10mg, 14mg, 17mgCold berries rather than cold mint. High strength without the menthol

The pairing worth thinking hardest about is Freezing Peppermint against Peppermint Storm, because they share all three strengths and get confused constantly. Storm is the brighter, more crystalline peppermint, the one reviewers say makes a glass of water taste icy afterwards. Freezing Peppermint is deeper and heavier, less about the sparkle and more about the sustained cold. Storm can drift slightly medicinal over a long session; this one drifts towards plain ice. Neither is better, and plenty of people keep both cans going.

If the strength appeals but the menthol does not, Icy Berries reaches 17mg without the arctic mint. The rest of the range is on our VELO collection page, and if you are shopping purely by numbers, the high strength pouches shelf gathers every 14mg-plus option we stock in one place.

Two details in that table catch people out. First, tobacco-free here means no tobacco leaf, not synthetic nicotine: the nicotine is pharmaceutical grade and derived from the tobacco plant, and VELO does not claim otherwise on its UK packaging. Second, there is no mini Freezing Peppermint. Minis stop well below this part of the ladder, so if you want a smaller pouch you are looking at Bright Spearmint territory instead, at a fraction of the strength.

How to Use VELO Freezing Peppermint

Twist the lid to open the can. The top section holds the fresh pouches and the shallow ring underneath the lid is the catch compartment for used ones, which is the polite Scandinavian way of saying please do not leave them on the table.

Take one pouch and sit it flat under your upper lip against the gum. The cold registers almost immediately, well before the nicotine does. A light tingle in the first couple of minutes is normal and noticeably sharper at 17mg, and it settles within five. Leave it in for 30 to 45 minutes, or until the flavour drops away and only the cooling is left.

One at a time is plenty at these strengths. Swallowing your saliva is fine, swallowing the pouch is not. If you are new to pouches entirely, start on our low strength collection and work upwards rather than beginning here, and our guide to how many nicotine pouches a day is reasonable is a sensible read before you buy in volume.

What Ten Cans of Freezing Peppermint Actually Cost

VELO sells single cans on its own UK site at £6.50. Ten of those comes to £65. Our ten-can pack is £34.99, which works out at £3.50 a can, so buying the way most regular users actually buy leaves you roughly £30 better off than picking them up one at a time. The strength you choose does not change the price, which is not true everywhere.

All three strengths are in stock, and they are the same £3.50 a can whether you take the 11mg or the 17mg. If you are mixing your order, the mint and menthol collection is the fastest way to see what else is on the shelf alongside it.

Who Should Buy Freezing Peppermint, and Who Should Skip It

Buy it if you want the coldest pouch VELO makes and you already know your way around a strong mint. It is exceptionally good at the specific job it was designed for: a hard, clean freeze with a nicotine level that will not leave a heavy user reaching for a second pouch twenty minutes later. The pouch itself is comfortable, the drip is low, and the release is smooth in a way that genuinely surprises people at 17mg.

Skip it if you are new to nicotine pouches, and skip it if your current favourite is a 6mg fruit. There is no soft entry point to this flavour, so start with Crispy Peppermint at 6mg or 10mg and come back when a 10mg mint stops registering. Skip it too if you use pouches all day and want to still taste your lunch, because sustained heavy cooling flattens your palate. And if you like a sweet mint, this is emphatically not that; it is dry, sharp and slightly austere on purpose.

For a wider view of where this ranks against everything else the brand makes, our VELO flavour ranking covers the full shelf, and the official listing is on the VELO UK product page. Nicotine is addictive regardless of how cold the pouch is, and these are for adults who already use it.
