Product Description

VELO Bright Spearmint: The Gentle End of the Mint Range

VELO Bright Spearmint (formerly Polar Mint) is the softest mint VELO makes, a sweet, clean spearmint with light cooling, sold in slim tobacco-free cans at 6mg, 8mg and 14mg with twenty pouches in each. VELO sums it up as "balanced spearmint with crisp menthol flavours", and balanced is the operative word. Nothing here is trying to ambush you.

The Polar Mint name was retired in the January 2024 rebrand. Nothing else changed: same recipe, same milligrams, greener can. Morrisons and several other grocers still list it under the old name, so if you have been buying Polar Mint 6mg from a supermarket shelf and this page looks unfamiliar, it is the same pouch in new clothes.

Spearmint Is Not Peppermint, and That Is the Whole Point

Most nicotine pouch mints are peppermint. Spearmint is a different plant with a different chemistry, and the practical difference is menthol content: peppermint is loaded with it, spearmint has very little. Menthol is what produces the cold, slightly numbing bite that people mean when they call a mint pouch harsh.

Take most of that away and you get what Bright Spearmint is: sweeter, rounder, herbal rather than icy. One reviewer put it well when he said it avoids the burning peppermint taste that so many competitors lead with. VELO adds a small amount of menthol back in for freshness, which is the crisp menthol part of the official description, but it sits underneath the spearmint rather than on top of it.

This matters more than it sounds. A large share of people who try nicotine pouches and give up do so because the mints felt aggressive, not because the format did not suit them. Spearmint is the standard answer to that problem, and this is the version most people meet first.

What Bright Spearmint Actually Tastes Like

Clean and moderately sweet, with a gentle spearmint aroma that arrives before you have properly settled the pouch. The taste is clear rather than complex: recognisable spearmint, a semi-sweet edge, and a cooling presence that registers as freshness rather than cold. Smooth is the word that comes up most often, and it is accurate.

An independent reviewer scored it 3.67 out of 5 and called it probably the best mint-flavoured nicotine pouch out there, which is a striking verdict from someone who admits to not being a regular pouch user. The pouch itself is comfortable, slim and moderately moist, and it sits in the lip without announcing itself.

Duration is the one place reports genuinely disagree. Some users get 40 to 45 minutes of flavour, others find it among the shorter-lived mints in the range at around 30. The likeliest explanation is that a gentler flavour simply becomes hard to notice sooner, rather than the pouch itself giving up.

The honest criticism is straightforward: it is too polite for some people. If you want the mint to hit you, this will read as underpowered no matter which strength you pick, because the softness is in the flavour rather than the nicotine. Ice fans in particular tend to find it insufficient. There is no version of Bright Spearmint that fixes that, and the answer is a peppermint rather than a stronger spearmint.

6mg, 8mg and 14mg: an Unusually Wide Gentle Ladder

Here is the quiet advantage of this flavour. Soft mints in this category are normally locked to low strengths, which is fine until your tolerance moves and you are forced onto something sharper. Bright Spearmint climbs to 14mg while keeping the same mild taste.

StrengthDotsVELO tierRoughlyWho it suits
6mg2 dots ⦿⦿Mellow8.6 mg/gFirst pouches and light all-day use
8mg3 dots ⦿⦿⦿Original11.4 mg/gThe middle step. More satisfying without changing the taste
14mg5 dots ⦿⦿⦿⦿⦿Intense20 mg/gEstablished users who want strength but not a strong flavour

The 14mg is the interesting one. It puts Intense-tier nicotine behind the mildest flavour in the range, which is an unusual combination and exactly what some people need: a proper dose without a mouthful of menthol. If you have been running a strong peppermint purely for the nicotine and quietly disliking it, this is the swap worth trying.

The milligrams-per-gram column is calculated from the can, not copied: 20 slim pouches at 14g net gives 0.7g a pouch. Note also that a three-dot Bright Spearmint is 8mg, while a three-dot Crispy Peppermint is 10mg. VELO genuinely uses that dot count for both, so read the printed number rather than counting.

One gap worth naming. VELO's official range also includes a 4mg Bright Spearmint in mini format, carrying a single dot and the Mellow band. We do not stock that one, so this page starts at 6mg.

From LYFT Mint to Polar Mint to Bright Spearmint

This flavour has outlived two brand names, which is unusual even by VELO standards. It began life as LYFT Mint, back when British American Tobacco sold its tobacco-free pouches under the LYFT label. When LYFT became VELO in the UK in January 2022, the flavour carried over as Polar Mint. Two years later the global rebrand renamed it again, and it became Bright Spearmint.

The recipe survived both changes intact. A reviewer who tried the LYFT version and the VELO version side by side concluded they were basically the exact same thing, and the same was true of the second rename. If you liked this pouch in 2020, you will recognise it now.

The renames are why searches for Polar Mint still run at meaningful volume more than two years after the name disappeared from the official range. Supermarket stock turns over slowly and grocery listings turn over slower still, so the old name will be with us for a while yet. Other flavours went through the same process: Ice Cool became Crispy Peppermint, Cool Storm became Peppermint Storm, and Freeze became Freezing Peppermint. Our VELO guide keeps the full map.

Mini or Slim, and Which One You Are Buying Here

Bright Spearmint is one of the few VELO flavours produced in both formats. The mini holds 15 smaller pouches, roughly 0.35g to 0.4g each, and exists only at the lower strengths. The slim holds 20 at 0.7g and covers the full ladder.

Every can on this page is slim. If you specifically want the mini, that is a different product and we do not currently carry it.

The difference between them is not simply that one is weaker. A mini concentrates its milligrams into half the material, so the same dose feels sharper and arrives faster. A slim spreads it over roughly twice the gum contact, which usually means a gentler onset and a flatter, longer release. Given that the appeal of Bright Spearmint is being unobtrusive, the slim arguably suits it better anyway.

Bright Spearmint Against the Rest of the VELO Mints

Read this table as a temperature scale. Bright Spearmint anchors the mild end, and it is the only spearmint among them.

PouchStrengthsCharacter
VELO Bright Spearmint6mg, 8mg, 14mgSweet herbal spearmint, lightest cooling. The gentle one
VELO Crispy Peppermint6mg, 10mgDry peppermint, moderate chill. The UK best-seller
VELO Minty Lemon10mgMint with a citrus lift. Brighter and more tart
VELO Peppermint Storm11mg, 14mg, 17mgMenthol-led and sharp, with serious strength behind it
VELO Freezing Peppermint11mg, 14mg, 17mgThe coldest VELO makes. Deep sustained freeze

The usual path runs upward from here. People start on Bright Spearmint, and those who want more move to Crispy Peppermint for a proper peppermint or straight to Peppermint Storm if they want cold with it. Plenty of people never move at all, which is rather the point. The full range sits on the VELO collection page, and the mint and menthol shelf covers the other brands.

Worth flagging a common listing error. Several UK retailers advertise Bright Spearmint at 10mg, which does not appear in VELO's official ladder for this flavour at all. The genuine strengths are 4mg, 6mg, 8mg and 14mg, of which we stock the middle three. If a listing shows a strength the official range does not, treat it with suspicion.

How to Use VELO Bright Spearmint

Twist the lid open. Fresh pouches sit in the body of the can, used ones go in the shallow catch compartment beneath the lid until you find a bin.

Set one pouch flat under your upper lip against the gum and leave it alone. No chewing. The tingle here is mild by design, which is part of why this flavour gets recommended to newcomers so often. Give it thirty to forty-five minutes, or until the spearmint fades below the point of noticing.

One at a time is plenty even at 14mg. Swallowing your saliva is fine, swallowing the pouch is not. If this is your first pouch, the 6mg is about as forgiving as the format gets, and the rest of the gentle end sits in our low strength collection. Our note on daily pouch use covers pacing.

What Ten Cans Cost

Single cans go for around £6.50 on the high street, so ten works out near £65. Our ten-can pack is £34.99, which is £3.50 a can, and all three strengths cost the same.

Bright Spearmint is a sensible flavour to buy in a mixed-strength pack, since the taste does not change as you climb: a 6mg for the day and a 14mg for the evening gives you the same experience with different nicotine behind it. The VELO range page lists everything else if you are building an order.

Who It Suits, and Who Should Buy Something Else

Buy it if peppermint has always felt too harsh, if you are new to pouches and want the least intimidating start available, or if you want a strong pouch that does not taste strong, which the 14mg does better than anything else in the range. It is also the safest thing to hand someone trying the format for the first time.

Buy something else if you want cooling. This flavour is deliberately short on menthol and no amount of strength will change that, so Peppermint Storm or Freezing Peppermint are the honest recommendations. Buy something else if you find sweeter mints cloying, since the semi-sweet edge here is a real characteristic rather than a trace. And if you want the 4mg mini specifically, that is in VELO's range but not on our shelf.

The official listing is on the VELO UK Bright Spearmint page, and our VELO flavour ranking sets it against the rest. Nicotine is addictive however gentle the flavour, and these pouches are for adults who already use it.
