ZYN Strengths and the Dot System: One Ladder, Not Two
This is the single most-mangled fact on the UK ZYN internet. Search it and you'll be told the dots run one to four, or one to five, or that Mini and Regular use separate scales. They don't. Two footnotes the tin won't give you. First, the five-dot rung covers two numbers: the current cans (Menthol Ice, Blackcurrant Frost) are 13.5mg, while the previous-generation cans we still stock (Icy Mint, Icy Blackcurrant) print 12.5mg. Same dot count, one milligram apart. Second, a Mini pouch is physically smaller, so a 6mg Mini is a higher nicotine-to-pouch-weight ratio than the number alone suggests — it does not feel like "half" of an 11mg Regular. And a translation for what people actually type into Google: a ZYN 3mg is the one-dot Low, a ZYN 6mg the two-dot Medium, and a ZYN 11mg the four-dot X-Strong — the rung some shops list as ZYN Extra Strong.
If you smoked around twenty a day, 6mg or 9mg is the sensible landing spot. Five a day or a casual vaper? Start at 3mg. Why Two Shops Call the Same Can Different Names
Here is a genuine trap. ZYN prints its own strength words on the can — X-Low, Low, Medium, Strong, X-Strong, XX-Strong. Most UK retailers then ignore those and apply their own house scale on top. So a 6mg can that ZYN labels Medium gets sold as "Strong" by one shop and "Normal" by another, and a shopper comparing two tabs concludes they're looking at two different products. They aren't.
Our rule is simple: we quote the milligrams and the dot count, because those are printed on the can and can't be spun. Where we use words at all, they're ZYN's own. Old Name, New Can: the ZYN Renames
ZYN reworked its packaging and renamed several flavours, and nobody online explains it properly — which is why you'll find shops listing the old and new names side by side as if they were two different products. Here's what actually changed:

That last row is the one everyone gets wrong. Several large retailers tell you Icy Mint "became" Menthol Ice and Icy Blackcurrant "became" Blackcurrant Frost. If that were true, the mg would match — and it doesn't: 12.5mg versus 13.5mg. They are related but distinct products, and while the previous-generation cans last, you can buy either.
How Many Pouches Are in a Can of ZYN?
Every competitor fudges this with "20 or 21, it varies". Here's the actual answer, which has three cases:
- 20 pouches — the current official UK cans, at every strength from 3mg up.
- 10 pouches — the 1.5mg X-Low Minis only. It's a deliberately smaller can, not a short measure.
- 21 pouches — older-generation and EU-import Regular cans, which were filled to 21. This is why two shops quote different numbers for what looks like the same product: they're holding different stock.
So if a can in your hand says 21 and this page says 20, nothing is wrong — you have an earlier-run can. Check the base of the tin for the best-before date; pouches don't spoil, but flavour and moisture fade past it, so keep cans somewhere cool and dry rather than in a car.

How to Use ZYN Pouches
Four steps, no ceremony:
- Open the can — twist to break the seal. The lid doubles as a compartment for used pouches, which is more useful than it sounds.
- Place the pouch under your top lip, slightly off to one side. Don't chew it, don't suck it, don't move it around.

- Age. The Tobacco and Vapes Act 2026 received Royal Assent on 29 April 2026 and makes it a criminal offence to sell nicotine pouches to under-18s from 29 October 2026. - Duty. The Vaping Products Duty that starts on 1 October 2026 applies to e-liquid. Nicotine pouches are not covered by it — there is no pouch excise in force or proposed, so ZYN carries 20% VAT and nothing else.
