ZYN Strengths Explained: the Dot System, mg Levels and Mini vs Slim

Every UK ZYN strength decoded by the shop that stocks them all: the full dot ladder from 1.5mg to 13.5mg, what the dots on the can mean, and Mini vs Slim compared properly.
Ask ZYN a simple question — "how strong is this?" — and the can answers you in dots. Not milligrams, not a friendly label on the front, just a row of dots that means everything to people who already know the system and nothing to anyone picking up their first tin. The answer fits in a couple of sentences:
UK ZYN runs from 1.5mg to 13.5mg of nicotine per pouch, and the dots on the can count the strength rungs: 1 dot is 3mg, rising a rung at a time to 6 dots at 16.5mg Max. The dotless 1.5mg X-Low Minis sit below the ladder, and one legacy 12.5mg strength sits just off it.
We sell every ZYN strength stocked in the UK and field the "what do the dots mean" question most weeks — everything else in this guide is the detail behind that box. (Updated July 2026 for the current UK ZYN range and the 2026 flavour renames.)
Fair warning about what you'll find elsewhere: at the time of writing, the pages ranking for ZYN strengths include one guide whose dot ladder is shifted a full rung out of place, one retailer whose FAQ names a strongest ZYN its own chart doesn't contain, and an American article cheerfully explaining that ZYN comes in "3mg and 6mg" — true in Ohio, useless in Oldham (the full US-vs-UK split is below). The dots aren't complicated; the coverage is just careless. Here is the whole system, correctly, in one place.
Every UK ZYN Strength on One Ladder
This is the table the whole guide hangs off. Milligrams are per pouch, not per gram — worth saying early because a few retail listings quote mg/g and make everything look five times stronger than it is. Format matters as much as the number: everything at 6mg and under is a small, dry Mini pouch; everything from 9mg up is the larger, moist Regular (the format ZYN used to call Slim).
| Strength (per pouch) | Dots on the can | ZYN's label | Format | Flavours we stock |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1.5mg | No dots (X-Low band) | X-Low | Mini — 10-pouch can | Cool Mint, Spearmint, Black Cherry |
| 3mg | 1 dot | Low | Mini | Cool Mint, Spearmint, Black Cherry, Citrus, Apple Mint |
| 6mg | 2 dots | Medium | Mini (the Mini ceiling) | Cool Mint, Spearmint, Black Cherry, Citrus, Apple Mint, Coffee |
| 9mg | 3 dots | Strong | Regular | Cool Mint, Red Fruits |
| 11mg | 4 dots | X-Strong | Regular | Cool Mint, Spearmint, Black Cherry, Citrus, Coffee, Guava Spice, Watermelon Mint, Blueberry Mint |
| 12.5mg | XX-Strong band (previous-generation cans) | XX-Strong | Regular | Icy Mint, Icy Blackcurrant |
| 13.5mg | 5 dots | XX-Strong | Regular | Menthol Ice, Blackcurrant Frost |
| 16.5mg | 6 dots | Max | Regular | Not stocked — see the strongest ZYN below |
Two quirks in that table deserve a sentence each. The 12.5mg pair — Icy Mint and Icy Blackcurrant — are previous-generation XX-Strong products that sit alongside the current 13.5mg pair rather than being replaced by them; treat them as the half-step below Menthol Ice. And the 16.5mg Max tier is the top of ZYN's printed ladder but not something you'll readily find on UK shelves — more on that below.
How the ZYN Dot System Works
Flip any ZYN can over in your hand and the front tells you three things: the flavour, the format, and a row of dots. The dots are the strength scale. One filled dot is the bottom rung at 3mg; each additional dot is one step up; six dots is the 16.5mg ceiling. The 1.5mg X-Low cans sit below the dotted rungs as a beginner band of their own. ZYN would rather you learn one visual than memorise seven numbers, and to be fair, once you've decoded it, the system is quicker to read at a glance than any label.

What does 2 dots on a ZYN can mean?
Two dots is 6mg per pouch — ZYN calls it Medium, and it's the strongest pouch the Mini format goes to. That last part trips people up constantly: if you want more than two dots, you're not just going up in strength, you're changing format, from the small dry Mini to the bigger moist Regular. Every 6mg ZYN — Cool Mint, Spearmint, Citrus, Coffee and the rest — is a two-dot Mini.
What is a 3-dot ZYN in mg?
Three dots on a ZYN can means 9mg per pouch — the Strong tier, and the first rung of the Regular format. It's the natural first stop for anyone stepping up from the Minis: same ladder, but a moist pouch that releases noticeably faster. In the UK the three-dot tier is thin on flavours — Cool Mint and Red Fruits are the two 9mg cans we stock — so plenty of people step from 6mg straight to 11mg — a bigger jump than it looks on the can, because it skips the 9mg rung entirely.
The full dot count, in one breath
1 dot 3mg Low · 2 dots 6mg Medium · 3 dots 9mg Strong · 4 dots 11mg X-Strong · 5 dots 13.5mg XX-Strong · 6 dots 16.5mg Max — with the dotless 1.5mg X-Low Minis underneath the ladder entirely. If you remember nothing else: Minis never carry more than two dots, and anything with three or more dots is a moist Regular pouch. One caution for pouch-hoppers: the dot scale is ZYN's own. VELO and Nordic Spirit print dot scales too, and the same dot count does not mean the same milligrams across brands — the mg number is the only figure that travels.
Why do Icy Mint and Icy Blackcurrant say 12.5mg?
Because they're from the ladder's previous edition. Before ZYN settled on the current 13.5mg XX-Strong tier, the top of the everyday range was a 12.5mg pair — Icy Mint and Icy Blackcurrant — and both are still sold as products in their own right rather than relics. They're not the same cans as Menthol Ice and Blackcurrant Frost with different stickers; they're the strength sibling one milligram down, and some longer-term users genuinely prefer the older pair's slightly softer landing. If you see 12.5mg on a listing and wonder whether it's a misprint of 13.5: it isn't, it's just the generation before.
How Much Nicotine Is in a ZYN Pouch?
ZYN pouches contain between 1.5mg and 13.5mg of nicotine per pouch across the UK range we stock, with the exact milligram figure printed into the ladder above. The number is the total nicotine content of one pouch, and it's the honest way to compare pouches with each other. It is not the amount your body absorbs — some of the nicotine stays in the pouch when you bin it, which is why a 6mg pouch doesn't feel like chain-smoking three cigarettes. What the number does reliably tell you is how any two pouches compare: an 11mg ZYN is close to twice a 6mg, whatever the absolute absorption works out to.
How many pouches per can?
Current UK cans hold up to 20 pouches — with one deliberate exception. The 1.5mg X-Low cans hold 10 pouches and are priced accordingly, which makes them a cheap, low-commitment way to find out whether pouches suit you at all. (You'll spot some cans printed with 21 — pack counts have drifted between production runs, so treat "around 20" as the honest figure.) All of them contain nicotine, flavourings and plant-based filler; ZYN's own wording is that its pouches are tobacco-leaf-free — nicotine derived from tobacco, no tobacco leaf in the pouch — the distinction that keeps pouches legal where snus is not (more in the legal bit).
What's the Strongest ZYN You Can Buy?
The strongest ZYN we stock — and the strongest you'll commonly find anywhere in UK retail — is Menthol Ice at 13.5mg, a five-dot XX-Strong Regular that pairs the biggest nicotine load in the range with the flavour best suited to carrying it. Its stablemate Blackcurrant Frost matches it at 13.5mg for anyone who wants the top tier without a full menthol freeze, and the previous-generation Icy Mint and Icy Blackcurrant hold the 12.5mg half-step just below.

What about the six-dot tier? ZYN's printed ladder does top out at a 16.5mg Max, and you'll occasionally see listings for it circulating through UK retailers. We don't stock it, most UK shops don't either, and honestly: the gap between 13.5mg and a comfortable experience is already narrow enough that we'd rather point heavy users at Menthol Ice and let them decide from there. If a five-dot pouch doesn't feel like enough, the answer is usually two pouches spaced out rather than a rung you'll struggle to find twice. For the full strongest-pouch conversation — including how ZYN's ceiling compares with high-strength brands like Pablo — our Menthol Ice page goes deeper than this guide needs to.
ZYN Mini vs Slim (Regular): What's the Difference?
First, the naming confusion that generates half the questions: ZYN Slim hasn't been discontinued — it's been renamed Regular. Same moist pouch, same strengths, new name on the can. So "Mini vs Slim", "Mini vs Regular" and "Mini vs normal" are all the same question, and the answer is about much more than size.
Across texture, strength range, size and release speed, ZYN Mini and ZYN Regular differ on nearly every dimension except the logo:
| ZYN Mini | ZYN Regular (formerly Slim) | |
|---|---|---|
| Pouch texture | Dry | Moist — 35% moisture at 9/11mg, 40% at 13.5mg |
| Strengths | 1.5–6mg (X-Low to 2 dots) | 9–13.5mg stocked (3–5 dots) |
| Pouch size | Smaller — about 28 × 13mm (ZYN's own spec) | Larger — about 34 × 14mm |
| Pouches per can | Up to 20 (1.5mg X-Low: 10) | Up to 20 |
| Release feel | Slower build, steadier plateau | Faster onset, more upfront flavour |
| Under the lip | Near-invisible, minimal drip | Noticeable if you look, still discreet |
Why is ZYN Mini dry?
ZYN Mini pouches are dry by design, and the design has consequences. A dry pouch needs your saliva to get going, so the nicotine and flavour arrive gradually rather than all at once — a gentler curve that suits lower strengths and newer users. It also means Minis sit weightlessly under the lip with almost no drip, which is why they're the discretion pick for meetings, trains and anywhere you'd rather not visibly be Doing A Thing. The trade-off is patience: a Mini takes a few minutes to feel like anything, and people who bin one at the two-minute mark and declare it broken simply haven't waited.
What the moisture number actually does
Regular pouches come pre-moistened — over a third of the pouch by weight is water and humectants (moisture-retaining ingredients) — so release starts on contact. That's the real reason a 6mg Mini and a hypothetical 6mg moist pouch would feel different: moisture changes the delivery speed, not just the comfort. It's also why the step from a two-dot Mini to a three-dot Regular feels bigger than 3mg on paper — you're getting more nicotine and getting it faster. Budget for the format change, not just the dot count.

Which ZYN Strength Should You Start With?
Strength choice is about your existing nicotine intake, nothing else. There are no prizes for starting high — the classic new-user mistake is buying the strongest can in sight, having a rough first evening, and writing off pouches entirely. Map yourself honestly:
- New to nicotine, or barely use it: start at 1.5mg X-Low — the 10-pouch can exists precisely for this experiment — or 3mg if you want to feel something definite.
- Occasional vaper or social smoker: 3mg is the comfortable floor; 6mg if your habit is more regular than you like to admit.
- Daily vaper or ten-a-day smoker: 6mg Minis will feel familiar; 9mg Red Fruits or Cool Mint if the Minis feel like they're working too hard.
- Heavy vaper, twenty-a-day smoker, or already on strong pouches: 11mg X-Strong is the sensible entry — Blueberry Mint, Guava Spice and Watermelon Mint all live there — with the 12.5–13.5mg tier available once you know how four dots treats you.
Whatever the strength, pace beats dosage: one pouch at a time, and if you're wondering how many is reasonable across a day, we've written up how many nicotine pouches per day makes sense separately. And if a strength makes your head swim, go down a rung, not "through it" — tolerance you have to fight for is your body voting no.
How ZYN Strengths Compare to VELO and Nordic Spirit
All three big UK pouch brands print dot scales, which fools people into thinking the scales agree with each other. They don't — each brand's dots map to its own ladder, so compare milligrams, never dots. What the three ranges actually look like side by side:
| Brand | UK strength span | Sweet spot of the range | Ceiling |
|---|---|---|---|
| ZYN | 1.5–13.5mg stocked (ladder printed to 16.5mg) | 6–11mg | Menthol Ice 13.5mg |
| VELO | Roughly 6–17mg across the current range | 10–11mg | 17mg Max tier |
| Nordic Spirit | 6–17mg | 9–11mg | 17mg Max |
The useful pattern: ZYN is the only one of the three with a proper beginner basement — nothing at VELO or Nordic Spirit goes anywhere near 1.5mg — while VELO and Nordic Spirit push slightly past ZYN's stocked ceiling at the top. An 11mg pouch, conveniently, means roughly the same thing in all three ranges (and happens to be four dots in each), so X-Strong users can hop brands freely at that tier. For the fuller pictures, our VELO guide and Nordic Spirit guide break down those ladders the way this page does for ZYN.
ZYN in the US vs the UK: Not the Same Range
If you've researched ZYN on American sites — or watched any US pouch content — unlearn most of it. US ZYN comes in 3mg and 6mg only, in 15-pouch cans, with no dot system; ZYN Ultra, launched in the US in 2026, adds moist 9mg and 11mg options but remains a US-only product. UK ZYN is a different catalogue: 20-pouch cans, the seven-rung dot ladder, and a stocked ceiling of 13.5mg that simply doesn't exist on American shelves. So when a US article says "6mg is the strong one", it's right — over there. Here, 6mg is the midpoint of the Mini range and less than half the top of the ladder. The flavour lists differ too (several UK flavours have been renamed — Espressino is now Coffee, Bellini became Peach), so treat any US strength chart as a different product line that happens to share a logo.
How to Use a ZYN Pouch, in Five Steps
Same technique at every strength — the only thing that changes with the dots is how much respect the pouch deserves.
- Twist the lid to line up the arrows and lift — the top compartment of the can is a bin for used pouches, which is easily ZYN's most quietly brilliant feature.
- Place one pouch between your upper lip and gum, slightly off-centre, flat side against the gum.
- Leave it alone. A tingle or light burn for the first few minutes is normal and fades; no chewing, no sucking, no fiddling.
- Keep it in for 15 to 60 minutes — flavour and effect taper off naturally; swallowing while it's in is fine, swallowing the pouch is not.
- Park the used pouch in the lid until you reach a bin.
If the tingle at your chosen strength is closer to punishment than sensation, that's the ladder telling you to step down a dot.
The Legal Bit, Briefly
Nicotine pouches are fully legal to buy and use in the UK — they contain no tobacco leaf, which is why they escape the EU-era ban that still applies to actual snus. On age: we operate a strict 18+ policy at checkout, and from 29 October 2026 that stops being a retailer choice and becomes statutory law — the Tobacco and Vapes Act 2026 makes selling nicotine pouches to under-18s a criminal offence across the UK. Nothing about the Act changes the strengths on this page; the Act leaves room for ministers to cap pouch strengths through later regulations, but no cap has been proposed. Buy from UK-facing retailers and the cans on this page are exactly what you'll get; import listings are often where mystery strengths and odd pack counts creep in.
ZYN Strength FAQs
How much nicotine is in a ZYN pouch?
ZYN pouches contain between 1.5mg and 13.5mg of nicotine per pouch across the UK range. The figure is per pouch, not per gram — a 6mg ZYN pouch contains six milligrams of nicotine in total, of which only part is absorbed during use.
What does 2 dots on a ZYN can mean?
Two dots on a ZYN can means 6mg per pouch — the Medium tier, and the strongest strength the dry Mini format reaches. Every two-dot ZYN in the UK is a Mini.
What is a 3-dot ZYN in mg?
A 3-dot ZYN is 9mg per pouch — the Strong tier and the first rung of the moist Regular format. In the UK it's a small club: Cool Mint and Red Fruits are the 9mg cans.
What is the strongest ZYN in the UK?
Menthol Ice at 13.5mg per pouch is the strongest ZYN in UK retail, alongside Blackcurrant Frost at the same strength. ZYN's ladder is printed to a 16.5mg Max, but that tier is rarely stocked in the UK.
Is ZYN Mini weaker than the Regular pouches?
Yes, on both counts that matter: ZYN Mini tops out at 6mg while ZYN Regular starts at 9mg, and the dry ZYN Mini pouch releases nicotine more slowly than the moist Regular even rung for rung.
Why are ZYN Mini pouches dry?
ZYN Mini pouches are dry by design: the dry pouch activates gradually with saliva, giving a slower, steadier release with minimal drip — better suited to low strengths, new users and situations where discretion matters.
How many pouches are in a can of ZYN?
Up to 20 in current UK cans, with one exception: the 1.5mg X-Low Mini cans hold 10 pouches. Some older print runs state 21, so treat "around 20" as the reliable figure.
Are ZYN strengths the same in the US and the UK?
No. US ZYN is 3mg and 6mg in 15-pouch cans (plus the US-only ZYN Ultra at 9/11mg); UK ZYN runs 1.5mg to 13.5mg stocked, in 20-pouch cans with the dot system printed on the front.
Is 6mg ZYN strong?
Middling. ZYN 6mg is the Medium tier, the top of the Mini format and the most-bought single strength in our ZYN orders — comfortable for regular vapers and ten-a-day smokers, punchy for a true beginner, and mild for anyone used to 11mg pouches.
What ZYN strength should a beginner start with?
1.5mg X-Low if you're new to nicotine — the 10-pouch can is built for exactly this trial — or 3mg if you already vape or smoke occasionally. Starting above 6mg with no nicotine history is how first pouches become last pouches.
